For many people, the bathroom is the most functional, and therefore the least exciting, room in the house, but these days there are many ways to give it a little zing. From installing electric hand dryers to improve hygiene to including some exceptionally funky cupboards and cabinets, you can make sure everyone takes notice next time you choose to decorate.

Electric hand dryers aren’t just for public washrooms

If you ever thought electric hand dryers are only to be used in the toilets of the local pub and in the washroom at work, it’s time you started to think again. There are a number of domestic models on the market these days, allowing you to give your bathroom a sleek, modern look, and to remove the need for hand towels that often tend to clutter the overall look of the area.

Cupboards and cabinets to make the room look larger

Many domestic bathrooms are rather small these days, especially those in flats and apartments. This doesn’t have to mean that owners need to think small, however. By including tall, attractive cupboards and one or two mirror-fronted cabinets, the room can start to appear far bigger than it really is. It’s an optical illusion, of course, but it’s highly effective.

Have a stand-alone bath for that extra touch of elegance

The vast majority of baths are fixed against the wall, of course, and in many cases they are abutted snugly against a corner, but a stand-alone bath gives the room a wonderfully independent look. Free-standing baths are available in sleek, modern designs as well as classic styles from a bygone era, so you will have plenty of options to choose from.

Experiment with a splash of colour

If you really want a bathroom that stands out from the rest, you will need to think hard about the colours that you use. There are several standard shades used, of course, so you may need to come at this from a slightly different angle. Instead of pale pink or light blue, why not try a jazzy yellow or perhaps a warm orange pastel colour? As always, the choice is yours.

Don’t miss out on the warmth

In the winter months, a cold bathroom is about as unwelcoming as life can get, so you simply have to make sure you incorporate some warmth into your design. A heated towel rail is always a good idea, but in a larger room it won’t be enough. Radiators work well, although you may need to consider the space implications.
